Federal Way prohibits dangerous exotic animals under RCW 16.30 and KCC Title 11. Large cats, primates, bears, crocodilians, and venomous reptiles are banned. Common reptiles and small mammals are allowed.
Federal Way follows Washington State Dangerous Wild Animal Act RCW 16.30, which prohibits possession of dangerous wild animals as pets. Banned species include lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, cheetahs, and other large cats over 15 pounds at maturity; bears; primates (monkeys, apes); wolves and wolf hybrids beyond second generation; crocodilians; and venomous reptiles. Pre-existing owners registered before the 2007 law may keep their animals under strict permit and insurance requirements. King County Code Title 11 adds county-level enforcement and applies in Federal Way. Common exotic pets allowed include non-venomous snakes (corn, ball python, king), bearded dragons, leopard geckos, parrots and cockatiels, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, ferrets, and aquarium fish. Federal Way does not separately license exotic pets, but owners should verify species legality before purchase. US Fish and Wildlife may also restrict certain species under the Lacey Act and CITES.
Possession of a prohibited dangerous wild animal is a gross misdemeanor under RCW 16.30.050. Animals are seized; owners face fines and criminal charges.
