Redmond does not have breed-specific restrictions. Dangerous and potentially dangerous dog rules apply to individual animals based on behavior under RCW 16.08 and King County Code 11.04.
Redmond follows Washington state policy and King County Code in rejecting breed-specific legislation (BSL). No dog breed is banned or restricted from residing in Redmond based solely on breed. Instead, RCW 16.08 and King County Code Chapter 11.04 define dangerous and potentially dangerous dogs by behavior. A potentially dangerous dog is one that has inflicted bites on a human or domestic animal on public or private property, or has chased or approached a person on public property in a menacing fashion. A dangerous dog is one that has inflicted severe injury, killed a domestic animal without provocation, or has been previously declared potentially dangerous and then acts aggressively. Owners of designated dogs must carry $250,000 in liability insurance, register the dog with Regional Animal Services, use a secure enclosure, and muzzle the dog in public. Some HOAs in Redmond neighborhoods such as Idylwood or Trilogy at Redmond Ridge impose breed restrictions in their CC&Rs independent of city law.
Failing to comply with dangerous dog designation: misdemeanor under RCW 16.08.100. Unrestrained designated dog: up to $500 fine and possible seizure.
