Redmond allows 6-foot fences in rear and side yards and 4-foot fences in front yards and corner-lot sight triangles under RMC 21.54. Taller fences require a permit and setback review.
Under RMC 21.54 (Accessory Uses and Structures) and RMC 21.08 (Development Standards), residential fences are limited to 6 feet in height when located in side and rear yards beyond the front building line. In front yards, fences are limited to 4 feet in height to preserve neighborhood streetscape and sight lines. On corner lots, a vision clearance triangle of 15 feet by 15 feet at the street intersection allows no fence, hedge, or obstruction taller than 30 inches. Fences taller than 6 feet require an administrative design review and building permit, with a maximum of 8 feet considered in rear yards abutting commercial or industrial property. Barbed wire and electrified fences are prohibited in residential zones. Retaining walls that function as fences are measured separately and have their own standards. The Sammamish Valley rural residential zone may allow 8-foot agricultural or deer fencing with planning approval. Fence materials must be finished on the side facing the neighbor unless otherwise agreed.
Zoning violation: civil infraction $100 to $500 per occurrence. Non-compliant fences may be ordered modified or removed.
