Kent limits front yard fences to 4 feet and side and rear yard fences to 6 feet under KCC 15.08. Fences over 6 feet require a building permit and structural review.
Kent City Code 15.08 (General and Supplementary Provisions of zoning) sets residential fence heights. Fences and walls in the front yard are limited to 4 feet if solid, though open or decorative fencing may be taller with planning review. Side and rear yard fences are limited to 6 feet. Any fence over 6 feet in height triggers a building permit under Kent's adoption of the Washington State Building Code. Corner lot fences must meet clear-sight triangle requirements: within 10 feet of a driveway or corner, fencing and landscaping must not exceed 30 inches in height to preserve driver visibility. Fences in public right-of-way are prohibited without an encroachment permit. Barbed wire and electric fences are restricted to industrial zones and agricultural parcels. Commercial and industrial zones allow taller fencing with security wire on top under KCC 15.08, provided the wire is set at least 6 feet above grade and the installation meets electrical code.
Fence height violations are zoning infractions enforced through Kent Code Enforcement. Property owners may be ordered to lower or remove non-conforming fencing.
