Swimming pools in Spokane require a barrier at least 48 inches tall per the WA State Building Code and IRC Appendix G. Self-closing, self-latching gates opening outward from the pool are required.
Spokane adopts the Washington State Building Code, which incorporates International Residential Code Appendix G for residential pools. Any pool, spa, or hot tub capable of holding water more than 24 inches deep requires a barrier at least 48 inches in height measured from the exterior side. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch at least 54 inches above ground (or on the pool side if lower). Openings in the barrier cannot allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. If the house wall serves as part of the barrier, any door leading from the house to the pool must have an audible alarm or approved safety cover. Above-ground pools with walls at least 48 inches tall can qualify if the ladder is removable or gated.
Non-compliant pool barrier is a building code violation. Stop-use order plus 250 to 1000 dollar fines until corrected.
