Small backyard recreational fires must be no more than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high, fueled by clean seasoned firewood or clean fuel. A competent adult 18 or older must attend the fire until it is cold and wet. Fires are banned during fire restrictions.
Castle Rock defines 'recreational or ceremonial burning' as open burning where the fuel has a total fuel area of 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height, occurring for pleasure, cooking, warmth, or similar purposes and 'fueled by clean, seasoned firewood, natural gas or other clean burning fuel.' Such fires must stay 25 feet from structures, be attended by a responsible adult at least 18 years old until fully extinguished, and be put out immediately if smoke or embers become a nuisance. Larger 'bonfires' (up to 5x5x5 feet) require a permit and a 50-foot clearance.
Unattended or nuisance fires must be extinguished on complaint; fire-restriction violations carry up to a $1,000 fine, 180 days jail, or both.
