Small backyard recreational fires are allowed in Reno using approved pits and chimineas, subject to size, clearance, and active fire-restriction rules from TMFPD. Wood fires suspended on Red Flag and No Burn days.
Reno follows International Fire Code 307, which permits recreational fires up to 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet tall, located at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible fence. Fires must be continuously attended by a responsible adult with a water source or extinguisher on hand. Burning of trash, construction debris, or yard waste is never allowed. On Red Flag days or during TMFPD Stage 2 restrictions, only gas and propane appliances may be operated. Washoe County Health also calls No Burn days during winter inversions when wood fires contribute to PM2.5 pollution.
Oversized or unattended fire: up to 500 dollars. Escaped fire: full suppression cost recovery plus possible criminal charges.
