Pearland requires property owners to keep grass, weeds, and brush below nine inches in height to prevent fire hazards, vermin harborage, and other public nuisance conditions.
Pearland's nuisance ordinance, found in Chapter 20 (Offenses and Miscellaneous Provisions), defines weeds and brush and prohibits growth above 9 inches on improved properties. The ordinance was tightened from 12 inches to 9 inches to encourage early maintenance. A separate provision addresses Undeveloped Land abutting developed properties so adjacent overgrowth can also be abated. Code Enforcement processes thousands of cases annually, with high grass and weeds making up a significant share.
Owners receive notice to abate. Failure to clear allows the city to mow at owner expense plus administrative fees, and citations may be issued for repeat violations.
