St. Petersburg requires property owners to keep lots free of overgrown vegetation, dead brush, and accumulated combustible debris, with grass and weeds limited to 10 inches and inspections handled by Code Compliance.
Chapter 11 of the City Code (Environmental Protection) and the property maintenance standards in Chapter 16 require owners of improved and vacant lots to control vegetation that creates a fire hazard, harbors pests, or impairs visibility. Grass, weeds, and other ground cover may not exceed 10 inches in height on developed parcels. Dead trees, fallen limbs, and accumulated brush must be removed. The Fire Marshal can also order abatement of vegetation that creates a fire hazard near structures, and Code Compliance can issue notices of violation directing owners to mow, trim, or clear within a specified period.
Failure to abate triggers escalating fines under Chapter 9 and the city may clear the property and lien the costs.
