Fire pit rules in St. Michael, MN β also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances β cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
St. Michael allows recreational fires (campfires) without a DNR burning permit only when the fire is no more than 3 feet in diameter by 3 feet high, set at least 25 feet from any structure and 5 feet inside the applicant's property line, and used for cooking, warming, or ceremonial purposes.
St. Michael follows the Minnesota DNR recreational-fire definition: a 'campfire' that is not more than 3 feet in diameter by 3 feet high, with 5 feet of cleared ground around the base. Recreational fires must be set at least 25 feet from any structure, 15 feet from an approved burn barrel, and 5 feet onto the property. Only natural cut wood (no longer than 24 inches) may be burned; leaves, brush, pine needles, processed lumber, varnished or painted materials, pallets, sawdust, wiring, furniture, carpeting, and grass are prohibited. The fire must be attended at all times, fully extinguished when unattended, and a hose or extinguisher must be on hand. The recommended pit design is no wider than 36 inches with brick or concrete block around the outside. Above-ground portable fireplaces are also allowed.
Failure to comply (oversize pit, prohibited materials, unattended fire) can be cited as a nuisance under Sec. 91.18 β misdemeanor, up to $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail. Leaf burning specifically is barred by Sec. 91.61(D). The Wright County Sheriff or St. Michael Fire Department may order any fire extinguished immediately.
