All consumer fireworks are illegal across Essex County. Massachusetts bans them statewide under MGL c.148 §39. Possession, use, sale, or transport carries fines and seizure; only state-licensed professional displays are permitted.
Massachusetts is one of a handful of states that outlaws every consumer firework, including sparklers, firecrackers, Roman candles, and ground-based items. No Essex County community can opt out, and there is no local permit for backyard fireworks. Police in Lynn, Lawrence, Salem, and surrounding towns confiscate fireworks on sight, and buying them legally in New Hampshire does not make possession lawful once you cross back into Massachusetts. Only professional pyrotechnicians holding a State Fire Marshal permit may stage a supervised display, and only with local fire department approval.
Possessing or using fireworks brings a $10 to $100 fine and seizure of the fireworks. Selling or offering fireworks for sale carries a $100 to $1,000 fine or up to one year imprisonment.
