Propane (LP-gas) storage in Alameda follows the California Fire Code adopted by the City. Small residential barbecue and patio-heater cylinders are allowed, but larger quantities and installations require a Fire Department permit. The Fire Prevention Bureau administers LP-gas permits and inspections.
The City of Alameda regulates liquefied petroleum gas (LP-gas, or propane) through the 2022 California Fire Code adopted in Alameda Municipal Code Chapter XV (Section 15-1) and enforced by the Alameda Fire Department's Fire Prevention Bureau. The Fire Code (Chapter 61) sets quantity limits, separation distances, and permit thresholds for storing and using LP-gas. Typical household uses, such as a barbecue grill cylinder (commonly the 20-pound / roughly 5-gallon size) or a patio heater, are allowed for residential use without a permit, but the Fire Code limits the aggregate quantity of LP-gas that may be stored at one- and two-family dwellings and restricts cylinder storage inside buildings. Larger aggregate quantities, commercial use, and the installation of LP-gas containers or systems require an operational and/or construction permit from the fire code official under the Fire Code permit provisions (Section 105). Cylinders should be stored outdoors, upright, in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources and building exits, and not in basements or below-grade areas. Because exact gallon thresholds and separation distances are set by the Fire Code tables rather than a unique Alameda ordinance, residents and businesses planning anything beyond ordinary barbecue or patio use should confirm requirements with the Alameda Fire Prevention Bureau.
Storing LP-gas above permitted quantities, indoors, or without a required permit can be cited by the Alameda Fire Department and ordered corrected. Commercial installations without the required Fire Code permit, or unsafe cylinder storage, are enforced as Fire Code violations subject to abatement.
