AMC 8-8.9, adopted in 2025, lets the Public Works Director reserve designated curbside and city-facility spaces for electric vehicles that are actively connected to a charger, and makes it unlawful to park in a posted EV charging space unless your vehicle is plugged in.
The City of Alameda has its own EV charging space ordinance. AMC 8-8.9 (Electric Vehicle Charging) authorizes the Public Works Director to limit the use of designated parking spaces at curbside locations and city-owned parking facilities to electric vehicles that are connected for electric charging purposes. The Director must install and maintain appropriate signage to designate such spots, and it is unlawful for any person to stop, park, or leave standing any vehicle in such a designated space unless it is connected to the electric charger. This means even an EV that is parked but not plugged in can be cited, and a gas vehicle parked in a charging space (ICE-ing) is prohibited. The provision was added by Ordinance No. 3382 N.S., effective April 15, 2025, making it one of Alameda's newest parking rules. This city ordinance complements California Vehicle Code Section 22511, which broadly prohibits parking a non-electric or non-connected vehicle in a designated EV charging space. Because Alameda is a dense island building out curbside charging, expect more posted EV spaces over time; always confirm signage before leaving any vehicle in a charging stall.
Citation for parking any vehicle in a posted EV charging space unless it is actively connected to the charger - applies to both gas vehicles and unplugged EVs.
