Richmond Fire Department enforces Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code limits on residential propane storage, capping aggregate cylinder capacity and requiring setback from buildings, ignition sources, and property lines.
Under the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (VA Code Β§27-94 et seq.), which adopts the International Fire Code Chapter 61, residential one- and two-family homes may store up to 40 pounds of aggregate liquefied petroleum gas (about two 20-pound grill cylinders) inside or in attached garages. Larger cylinders and ASME tanks must be located outside with minimum setbacks from building openings, property lines, and ignition sources. Cylinders must be secured upright, fitted with overfill protection devices, and protected from vehicle impact. Richmond Fire Department inspects complaints and may impose abatement orders for unsafe installations or hoarded cylinders.
Class 1 misdemeanor for fire code violations under VA Code Β§27-100. Civil penalties up to $1,000 per day for continuing violations. Removal of unsafe cylinders may be ordered.
