The City Fire Code (Municipal Code Ch. 8.04, amended Section 308.1.4.1) limits propane appliances. LP-gas burners with a container over 25 pounds (5 gallons) water capacity may not be placed on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction, except at one- and two-family dwellings.
Propane (liquefied petroleum gas) storage and use in the City of Santa Barbara is governed by the City Fire Code (Municipal Code Chapter 8.04, Ordinance No. 5920), which adopts the California Fire Code, including its LP-gas provisions, with local amendments. As amended, Fire Code Section 308.1.4.1 provides that 'LP gas burners having an LP gas container with a water capacity greater than 25 pounds (5 Gallon) shall not be located on combustible balconies or within 10 feet (3048 mm) of combustible construction,' with an exception for one- and two-family dwellings. This effectively bars larger propane tanks - bigger than the typical 20-pound barbecue cylinder - on the balconies of multifamily buildings and apartments. Standard barbecue-size cylinders (about 20 pounds / 5 gallons) used at single-family homes are not restricted by this section. Larger LP-gas containers, bulk storage, and installations are otherwise regulated under California Fire Code Chapter 61 (Liquefied Petroleum Gases), which the city adopts, covering tank siting, separation distances, and permits for storage above threshold quantities. Because much of the foothill area is a High Fire Hazard Area, residents should also keep tanks and appliances clear of vegetation; outdoor cooking appliances must be at least 30 feet from grass, brush, or forested areas in the High Fire Hazard Area under Section 4909.10. For exact tank-size siting and permit thresholds, confirm with the City Fire Department.
Misdemeanor under Municipal Code Section 8.04.020 (amended Section 110.4); each day a violation continues after notice is a separate offense. Storage above code thresholds without required permits is a fire code violation.
