Yellowstone County has no California-style mapped wildfire hazard zones, but commissioners impose Stage 1 and Stage 2 fire restrictions in dry, high-danger periods. Stage 1 bans open fires and fireworks and limits smoking; only propane/LP-gas devices that turn on and off stay allowed.
Montana manages wildfire risk through seasonal fire-restriction orders rather than fixed hazard-zone maps. When conditions worsen, Yellowstone County commissioners (with DNRC, BLM and fire agencies) enact Stage 1 restrictions: 'building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire except within a developed recreation site, fire ring or improved site is prohibited,' and smoking is limited to enclosed spaces or cleared areas. Fireworks are banned under these orders. An exemption allows LP-gas/propane devices that can be turned on and off, used only in an area cleared of flammable material within three feet. Stage 2 adds further limits. Orders are posted on mtfireinfo.org and the county site and rescinded when danger eases.
Violating a federal/BLM fire-restriction order can bring fines up to $5,000 for an individual and $10,000 for an organization plus up to six months in jail; county-order penalties apply within the county.
