Yavapai County divides unincorporated land into five Fire Ban Zones under Ordinance 2025-2. Each zone is placed into Stage 1, Stage 2, or unrestricted status separately based on fuel moisture, weather, and local conditions. Zones cover communities including Prescott Valley, Sedona, Camp Verde, Yarnell, and Black Canyon City.
Ordinance 2025-2 established a five-zone structure replacing the prior single-county approach. Zones cover Prescott Valley/Chino Valley, Sedona/Verde Valley including Cottonwood and Camp Verde, and southern/western areas including Ash Fork, Seligman, Black Canyon City, Congress, Peeples Valley, Yarnell, and Wilhoit. The Board of Supervisors declares Stage 1 (wood/charcoal fires banned outside developed sites, chainsaw and welding limits) or Stage 2 (all fires banned, no fireworks, no internal combustion engines for landscaping, no tracer ammunition) per zone. The Yarnell area was the site of the June 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire that killed 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots. The zoned approach lets the county lift restrictions in one area while keeping others under Stage 2.
Violation of declared restrictions is a Class 1 misdemeanor (up to $2,500 fine, 6 months jail). ARS Β§13-1709 cost recovery if conduct triggers emergency response.
