Yavapai County has no mandatory defensible-space ordinance, but the Yavapai Firewise program and Arizona DFFM recommend three-zone clearance: 0-5 ft (no combustibles), 5-30 ft (lean/clean), and 30-100 ft. The county Land Use Code Enforcement Unit handles tall-weed and trash nuisance complaints.
Unlike California, Arizona has no state-mandated 100-foot defensible space rule. Yavapai County relies on voluntary Firewise USA administered through the Yavapai Firewise Wildland Urban Interface Commission and Arizona DFFM. Zone 1 (0-5 ft) excludes dry grass, stacked firewood, juniper, and ladder fuels. Zone 2 (5-30 ft) allows spaced trees and low-resin shrubs. Zone 3 (30-100 ft) keeps dead material cleared and tree limbs raised 6-10 feet. Local fire districts (Central Yavapai, Verde Valley) may enforce stricter WUI rules. The Land Use Code Enforcement Unit accepts complaints about tall, dry weeds under the Weeds & Trash provisions. After the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire, Firewise participation rose sharply.
No county defensible-space fines. Weeds/trash nuisance violations enforced via the Planning and Zoning Ordinance through Land Use Code Enforcement. Fire district WUI codes may apply within district boundaries.
