Vancouver classifies garage and yard sales as temporary uses under VMC Chapter 20.885, permitting each event for no longer than two consecutive days. No special permit is required. Signage advertising the sale may not be posted more than seven calendar days total in a calendar year.
VMC Β§ 20.885.020 (Types of Temporary Uses) lists garage and yard sales as permitted temporary uses, limited to no more than two days per event. Garage sales are explicitly exempt from Vancouver's special event permit requirement under VMC Β§ 5.17.060. Signage is regulated by VMC Β§ 20.960.030 (Prohibited Signs), which bans garage-sale signs posted at a given address for more than seven cumulative calendar days per year. There is no express limit on the number of sales events per year in the municipal code, but each individual event may not exceed two days. Code compliance is managed by the City's Community Development department.
Illegal signs may be removed as violations of VMC Β§ 20.960.030. Exceeding the two-day event duration or operating an unpermitted commercial enterprise under a garage-sale guise may trigger code compliance action.
