Vancouver does not regulate residential inflatable holiday decorations by size, type, or theme. Continuously running blower motors are subject to VMC 7.05.010 (public disturbance), the sign code at VMC Chapter 20.960 reaches only inflatables bearing commercial messaging, and outdoor electrical connections require GFCI protection under the National Electrical Code enforced by Washington L&I.
VMC contains no ordinance specifically regulating inflatable holiday displays in residential yards. Blower motors are subject to VMC 7.05.010 β the public-disturbance standard reaches continuous mechanical noise that unreasonably interferes with the peace, comfort, and repose of neighboring property owners. There is no fixed decibel limit in 7.05.010; the standard is qualitative and complaint-driven. Inflatables on private residential property are not classified as signs under VMC Chapter 20.960 unless they contain commercial copy (a business name, logo, or product). VMC 20.960.030 (Prohibited Signs) restricts signs that utilize an inordinate light source such as beacons, strobe lights, or reflectors, and any sign that emits audible sound, odor, or visible matter β these provisions can reach commercial inflatables but not non-commercial residential displays. Outdoor 120-volt circuits used to power inflatables must have GFCI protection per the National Electrical Code adopted by Washington L&I; installing a new outdoor outlet requires an L&I electrical permit. Vancouver's residential accessory-structure rules cap permanent detached accessory buildings at 8 feet in height, but ordinary cold-air inflatables that deflate when unplugged are not 'structures' under the Building Code. HOA CC&Rs commonly cap inflatable size and require removal within 30 days of the holiday.
VMC 7.05.010 public-disturbance violations from continuously running blower motors are civil infractions enforced by Vancouver Police and Code Enforcement. Commercial advertising inflatables without a sign permit violate VMC Chapter 20.960. Right-of-way obstructions are enforced under VMC Title 11.
