Glen Cove Chapter 280 allows home occupations as an accessory use in residence districts only if the use is carried on entirely within the dwelling by the inhabitants, is clearly incidental and secondary to the dwelling purpose, and does not change the residential character of the property.
Permitted professional home occupations include the office or studio of a doctor, dentist, teacher, artist, architect, engineer, musician or lawyer, provided the premises are the practitioner's principal or main residence. Excluded uses include clinics, hospitals, barbershops, beauty parlors, tea rooms, tourist homes, animal hospitals and similar customer-traffic businesses. Home occupations cannot have employees who do not live at the dwelling, cannot store inventory or merchandise on the lot beyond what is reasonable, and cannot generate truck/customer traffic exceeding normal residential patterns. External signs are limited to a non-illuminated nameplate of 2 square feet maximum.
Operating a non-conforming home business is a Chapter 280 violation enforceable under Β§ 1-15 (up to $1,000 / 15 days per day). The city may issue cease-and-desist orders and pursue injunctive relief.
