Glen Cove Chapter 228 (Signs) tightly limits signs in residence districts. Home occupations may display only a single non-illuminated nameplate, typically not exceeding 2 square feet, identifying the practitioner and profession.
Chapter 228 was adopted on 8-25-1981 as Chapter 34 of the 1981 Code. It works with the residence-district provisions in Chapter 280: announcement signs in residential districts are capped at 16 square feet (e.g., for churches and schools), and home-occupation signs are limited to 2 square feet. Illuminated, flashing, animated and roof-mounted signs are prohibited in residence zones. Permanent signage requires a sign permit issued through the Building Department. Temporary garage-sale and political signs have separate rules (see garage-sale-signs, political-signs).
Unauthorized signage is a Chapter 228 violation enforceable under Β§ 1-15. The Building Department can order removal at the owner's expense.
