Table 196-12, adopted under § 196-12, sets maximum permissible continuous sound levels in dBA based on both the source of the sound and the type of property receiving it, measured at the real property line. m. When the source is an industrial occupancy and the receiving property is industrial or commercial, the ceiling rises to 75 dBA, again applying equally at night and during the day. Those commercial and industrial thresholds sit well above the 50/65 dBA nighttime/daytime limits the same table sets when a residential occupancy or public place is the receiving property, reflecting the code's judgment that noise between two business or industrial properties can run louder than noise reaching a home.

Section 196-13 layers a separate ceiling on top for sudden, sharp sounds: any impulse sound peaking above 80 dBA is a violation regardless of the source, unless it happens more than four times an hour, in which case the Table 196-12 continuous limits apply instead. A sound-level meter reading is taken under § 196-15 at least two feet inside the receiving property's line, at two locations five minutes and six feet apart, before a notice of violation issues.
