Construction hours in Glen Cove, NY — sometimes called construction noise rules or contractor work-hour ordinances — set when contractors can run power tools, hammers, and heavy equipment.
Under Chapter 196, the operation of pile drivers, steam shovels, pneumatic hammers, derricks, hoists and other heavy construction equipment is prohibited between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. on weekdays and all day Saturday, Sunday and holidays, except in emergencies with a permit from the Building Department Administrator.
Section 196-4 also prohibits erection, excavation, alteration or demolition of buildings attended by loud and unusual noise during the same restricted hours. Emergency work in the interest of public safety may proceed at any hour but requires a permit from the Building Department Administrator. Commercial landscaping, construction, roofing and tree work are barred entirely on Sundays and holidays under the 2025 amendment, except for emergency work in the interest of public safety. The narrower 'power equipment' rules (leaf blowers, mowers, chainsaws, woodchippers) are addressed under leaf-blower-rules.
Construction outside permitted hours without an emergency permit is a violation of Chapter 196 punishable under § 1-15 by fine up to $1,000 and/or 15 days in jail per offense; each day is a separate offense.
