A home occupation in unincorporated Alpine County may display one single, non-illuminated, wall-mounted sign of no more than six square feet, under Alpine County Code 18.70.090(G). Alpine County governs home-business signs through two parts of its zoning code. The home occupation standard in ACC 18.70.090(G) permits exactly one sign for a home occupation: a single, non-illuminated, wall-mounted sign of not more than six square feet in area. The broader sign regulations in ACC Chapter 18.74 set out what else is allowed. Several small signs are exempt from a sign permit under ACC 18.74.040, including property-number and occupant-name signs up to two square feet, on-premises incidental signs up to four square feet aggregate, one non-illuminated noncommercial sign per parcel up to four square feet, and window signs up to 25 percent of the window area or four square feet, whichever is less. A sign permit is otherwise required under ACC 18.74.060. In residential zones (RN, RE and residential PD designations), the Class A sign table in ACC 18.74.070 caps a freestanding sign at 12 square feet and 4 feet in height. ACC 18.74.050 prohibits animated, flashing, revolving, roof, vehicular and inflatable signs, and the chapter applies countywide except in the separately regulated Kirkwood Specific Plan area (ACC 18.74.020).
An over-size or illuminated home-occupation sign, or any non-exempt sign installed without the required permit, violates ACC 18.70.090 and Chapter 18.74 and is enforceable under the sign enforcement provision (ACC 18.74.100) and Title 18 penalties (ACC 18.92). Abandoned signs must be covered or removed within 90 days under ACC 18.74.030(C).
