Dallas, TX Invasive Plant Rules: Bamboo Restrictions (2026)

Dallas does not currently have a bamboo-specific ordinance. Texas has no statewide ban on bamboo planting. Running bamboo species can be highly invasive in the North Texas climate and may cause damage to fences, foundations, and neighboring properties. Under Texas property law, property owners are generally responsible for vegetation on their property, and neighbors may trim encroaching bamboo to the property line. If bamboo creates property maintenance issues (such as contributing to an unkempt property), Code Compliance may cite the owner under Chapter 18 property maintenance standards. The Dallas Development Code does not specifically address bamboo in its landscaping requirements. For new commercial and multifamily development, Dallas requires compliance with Article X landscape requirements that specify approved plant materials, but running bamboo is not on the approved street tree or landscape plant list. Residential homeowners have wide discretion in plant choices but should consider neighborhood impact and potential HOA restrictions.
