Miami Beach regulates artificial turf installation through Chapter 126 (Landscape Ordinance). Artificial turf is permitted in certain applications but must meet city standards for appearance, drainage, and heat mitigation, and cannot fully replace required landscape coverage in new development.
Chapter 126 of the Miami Beach Code addresses artificial turf as part of the city's landscape regulations. Artificial turf may be used in certain residential and commercial applications but is subject to standards that ensure proper drainage, appearance, and heat mitigation. The city's landscape ordinance requires a minimum percentage of living plant material in new development landscape plans, and artificial turf does not count toward required green space or landscape coverage ratios. Installation must ensure proper drainage to prevent ponding, which is critical on Miami Beach's low-lying barrier island where stormwater management is a priority. High-quality artificial turf products are preferred to minimize heat island effects in the tropical climate. Artificial turf in visible areas must maintain a natural appearance consistent with the neighborhood character. Permits may be required for installation depending on the scope of work and whether grading or drainage modifications are involved. The Environment and Sustainability Department provides guidance on acceptable artificial turf applications.
Artificial turf installations that violate Chapter 126 landscape coverage requirements are enforced by Code Compliance at (305) 673-7555. Non-compliant installations may require removal and replacement with living plant material to meet minimum landscape ratios.
