LMCO Β§ 156.052 (Exterior Property Areas) requires grass and weeds to be maintained below 10 inches. Managed Natural Landscapes with native plants are permitted under the Natural Landscape Ordinance (Chapter 97) if set back 5 feet from property lines, mowed at least once/year, clearly defined by edging/fencing, and posted with a visible sign. Fines start at $100.
Under LMCO Β§ 156.052, all exterior property areas including lawns must be maintained with plants under 10 inches in height. The Louisville Metro Managed Natural Landscapes (MNL) Ordinance provides an exception for native plant gardens complying with Chapter 97: they must be set back at least 5 feet from all property lines, mowed or cut back at least once per year, clearly defined by edging, fencing, or similar material, and posted with a sign visible to the public identifying the area as a managed natural landscape. Noxious weeds as defined by KRS 176.051 are never permitted. Turf-grass lawns left unattended do not qualify as MNL. Violations are enforced by the Department of Codes and Regulations and can be triggered by anonymous complaints via 311.
Fines starting at $100, up to $1,500 accumulating for repeat violations. Uncured fines can result in liens on the property. City may mow and charge the cost to the property owner. Rental properties: tenants may face eviction for lease violations.
