LMCO Chapter 102 (Trees) requires permits for any pruning of trees in the public right-of-way or public spaces. Private property tree trimming generally does not require a permit unless the tree is in a public right-of-way. All pruning must follow arboricultural standards; climbing spurs are prohibited. Equipment must be clean to prevent disease spread.
Under LMCO Chapter 102 (Louisville Metro Tree Ordinance, enacted December 2017), a permit is required from the Division of Urban Forestry before pruning, removing, or planting any tree in the public right-of-way (including the green verge or tree well). A permit is not required for pruning a branch less than 4 inches in diameter that is causing obstruction of pedestrian traffic, cross-visibility, or traffic controls, or for routine maintenance of less than 10% of the tree's canopy. On private property, trimming trees is the owner's right without permit requirement β but care must be taken not to extend trimming into the public right-of-way without a permit. All pruning equipment must be clean of contaminants to prevent disease spread. Climbing spurs/spikes are prohibited for pruning. The Division of Urban Forestry can be contacted via Metro311.
Pruning/removing a tree in the public right-of-way without a permit: citation, potential restoration cost. Illegal tree work can result in fines and replacement requirements. Report unpermitted tree work by calling Metro311 (311 or 502-574-5000).
