Louisville Metro enforces the Kentucky Building Code and Kentucky Residential Code smoke alarm requirements: hardwired interconnected smoke alarms with battery backup in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level in new construction and substantial renovations. Existing homes must have functional alarms but can use battery-only models.
Under the Kentucky Residential Code (KRC) Section R314, new single-family and multifamily construction requires smoke alarms that are AC-powered with battery backup and interconnected so all alarms sound when one detects smoke. Alarms must be installed in each sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms, and on each additional story including basements. During substantial renovations that require a permit, existing homes typically must be upgraded to the same standard within the scope of work. Existing homes not undergoing renovation must have functional smoke alarms in the same locations but are generally permitted to use battery-only alarms with 10-year sealed batteries. Rental housing is covered by LMCO property maintenance provisions requiring landlords to provide working alarms at the start of tenancy; tenants are usually responsible for battery replacement. The Louisville Fire Department operates a free smoke alarm installation program for qualifying residents. Carbon monoxide alarms are separately required where fuel-burning appliances or attached garages exist.
