In New Orleans, grass and weeds may not exceed 10 inches on your lot or in the strip between your property line and the curb. Owners must cut, mow, and remove cuttings. The city cuts uncut lots and bills the owner.
City Code Sec. 66-312 makes it every property owner's duty to keep grass and weeds cut on their lot and in the space between the property line and curbline (front, rear, and sides). A 2021 amendment lowered the trigger height from 18 inches to 10 inches. If grass exceeds the limit, Code Enforcement issues a notice; owners get days to abate before the city mows the lot (lot abatement) and charges the cost back. The parish is a consolidated city-parish, so New Orleans code governs the entire parish directly.
Failure to abate after notice lets the city cut the lot at the owner's expense; first cut typically starts around $300, rising with lot size, and unpaid costs attach to the ad valorem tax bill.
