Nevada County does not use a typical urban grass-height limit; instead its Hazardous Vegetation Ordinance requires that within designated Fuel Modification Areas all weeds and grasses be cut and removed down to four inches or lower for wildfire safety.
The Fuel Modification Area definition in Nevada County General Code Sec. G-IV 7.3(K) sets the operative height standard: weeds and grasses cut to four (4) inches or lower, ladder fuels pruned up to ten feet or higher, brush stands broken into mosaics, and dead or decaying trees and limbs removed. These treatments apply within the 100-foot defensible space around structures, along primary ingress-egress roadsides, and, per the County's updated Ordinance 2477 outreach materials, parcels of one acre or less may be treated as a Fuel Modification Area in their entirety at the Public Official's discretion. Dry grass is expressly listed as hazardous vegetation under Sec. G-IV 7.3(L).
Uncut dry grass and weeds within required clearance areas constitute a public nuisance; the County may issue a Notice to Abate, levy administrative penalties starting at $100, prosecute infractions or misdemeanors, and recover abatement costs through a property tax lien.
