Nevada County caps all vehicles at 80,000 pounds on county roads and bridges, bans commercial vehicles over 14,000 pounds from designated restricted roads such as Rattlesnake Road, and limits truck length to 23 feet on Coyote Street.
Nevada County Code Title 16, Chapter 4 regulates heavy and commercial vehicles on county roads in the unincorporated area. Section 16.04.010 sets a maximum total weight, including load, of 80,000 pounds on any county road or bridge. Section 16.04.030 prohibits commercial vehicles exceeding 14,000 pounds gross weight from designated restricted roads; currently Rattlesnake Road from its southerly intersection with Brooks Road to Dog Bar Road is restricted, with State Highway 174 and LaBarr Meadows Road designated as the alternate route. Exemptions cover passenger stage corporations, ambulances and hearses, public utility vehicles, vehicles serving enterprises within an affected subdivision, and trucks making direct-route pickups or deliveries on the restricted road. Section 16.03.235 (Ord. 2546, 07/08/2025) restricts truck traffic on Coyote Street to a maximum length of 23 feet, and Sections 16.04.050-16.04.130 require a transportation permit for non-legal (oversize or overweight) loads.
Under Section 16.04.170, violations of the weight-limit chapter are infractions carrying a mandatory fine of $100 for a first violation, $200 for a second within 12 months, and $500 for a third or subsequent violation within 12 months; every day a violation continues is a separate offense. Peace officers may also require weighing under Section 16.04.020.
