LMCO Chapter 102 requires permits for pruning trees in the public right-of-way throughout Jefferson County. Private property tree trimming needs no permit. Climbing spurs are prohibited for all pruning. Equipment must be decontaminated between trees to prevent disease spread.
Louisville Metro's Tree Ordinance (LMCO Chapter 102, enacted December 2017) applies throughout Jefferson County. A permit from the Division of Urban Forestry is required before pruning any tree in the public right-of-way or public space. No permit is needed for: removing branches under 4 inches in diameter causing traffic obstructions; or pruning less than 10% of the canopy. Private property tree trimming requires no permit. All pruning must follow arboricultural standards — climbing spurs are prohibited. Equipment must be clean of contaminants. Permits are obtained through Metro311 (311 or 502-574-5000).
Unpermitted ROW tree work: citation and potential restoration cost. Report violations to Urban Forestry via Metro311.
