Under LMCO Β§ 156.052 (Exterior Property Areas), all property owners in Jefferson County must maintain grass, weeds, and other plants below 10 inches. The Louisville Metro Managed Natural Landscapes (MNL) Ordinance (Chapter 97) provides an exception for native plant gardens if: set back at least 5 feet from all property lines; mowed/cut back at least once per year; clearly defined by edging, fencing, or similar material; and posted with a visible public sign identifying the managed natural landscape. Noxious weeds per KRS 176.051 are never permitted. Violations are enforced by Codes & Regulations, often initiated by anonymous 311 complaints. Approximately 21,599 property maintenance citations were issued in 2021, with significant enforcement in Jefferson County.
Fines start at $100, accumulating up to $1,500 for persistent violations. Uncured violations can result in property liens. City may mow and charge the cost to the property owner.
