Cooking fires and grilling are allowed in Sarasota County using approved fuels. Under the Florida Fire Prevention Code, in multifamily buildings gas and charcoal grills may not be used on balconies or within 10 feet of the structure. Single-family homes have far more freedom.
Sarasota County Code Β§ 54-116 permits cooking fires solely for preparing food using approved fuel: clean wood, charcoal, fire-starter logs or briquettes, LP gas, natural gas, or butane. For grills at multifamily dwellings, the statewide Florida Fire Prevention Code (adopting NFPA 1) provides that, for other than one- and two-family dwellings, no gas-fired grill, charcoal grill, or similar device may be used or kindled on any balcony, under any overhanging portion, or within 10 feet of any structure. LP-gas grills may not be stored on balconies. Single-family homeowners may grill in their yards, but must avoid creating a smoke nuisance and follow any active burn ban.
The Fire Marshal enforces grill and LP-gas rules under the Florida Fire Prevention Code; unsafe balcony grilling can be ordered stopped. Condo and HOA rules frequently add stricter grilling limits.
