Pueblo Fire Department enforces the International Fire Code as locally adopted by the City of Pueblo. IFC Β§ 308.1.4 prohibits open-flame cooking devices and LP-gas containers larger than 1 lb on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction at multi-family residences. Pueblo County Sheriff and the Pueblo Fire Marshal declare Stage 1 and Stage 2 fire restrictions during hot, dry, or windy conditions that can restrict residential charcoal and wood grilling.
The City of Pueblo adopts the International Fire Code (IFC) with local amendments, enforced by the Pueblo Fire Department under the Pueblo Municipal Code. IFC Β§ 308.1.4 prohibits charcoal burners, open-flame cooking devices, and LP-gas containers larger than 1 pound from being used or stored on combustible balconies, decks, or within 10 feet of combustible construction at apartments, condos, and townhomes. Exceptions apply for fully sprinklered buildings and to electric cooking devices. Single-family detached homes generally face no city restriction on backyard grilling under normal conditions. Pueblo County and the Pueblo Fire Marshal declare seasonal Stage 1 and Stage 2 fire restrictions based on fuel moisture, weather, and Red Flag warnings issued by the National Weather Service. Stage 1 restrictions typically prohibit open burning and charcoal or wood fires but allow propane or natural-gas grills with a shut-off valve. Stage 2 restrictions typically prohibit all outdoor cooking with open flames except fully enclosed, elevated propane appliances. Current restrictions are published on the Pueblo Fire Department and Pueblo County Sheriff's Office websites. Reckless burning that ignites a wildfire can be charged criminally under Colorado law.
Violations of IFC Β§ 308.1.4 are municipal offenses enforced by Pueblo Fire Department code inspectors and Pueblo Code Enforcement. Violating a Stage 1 or Stage 2 fire restriction during an active ban is a separate municipal or county offense with significant fines. Reckless burning resulting in wildfire damage may be charged criminally under C.R.S. Β§ 18-13-109 (fourth-degree arson) with restitution exposure.
