Paramus addresses abandoned vehicles through Chapter 415 and the Towers and Towing chapter, authorizing police to remove vehicles left on public ways or private property and recover costs from the owner.
Chapter 415 of the Paramus Code establishes local procedures for handling abandoned vehicles, supplementing N.J.S.A. 39:10A. The Police Department may impound any vehicle that appears abandoned on a borough street, parking area, or other public place. Notice is provided to the registered owner where ascertainable, and the vehicle may be sold or otherwise disposed of after the statutory waiting period if unclaimed. Towing is contracted under Chapter 401 (Towers and Towing), which sets approved tow operator standards and maximum fees. Vehicles on private property deemed nuisances or junk may also be addressed under Property Maintenance provisions.
The vehicle owner is responsible for towing, storage, and administrative fees; in addition, summonses may be issued and Β§ 1-15 penalties up to $2,000 may apply for nuisance vehicles on private property.
