Oakland County has no countywide commercial-vehicle parking rule. Each municipality sets its own. The common Oakland pattern is strict: only one commercial vehicle (typically a pickup or cargo van) under 6,000 lbs may be parked at a single-family residence. Royal Oak Zoning Code limits each residential lot to one commercial vehicle owned by the occupant. Troy bars on-street parking of commercial vehicles for more than 1 hour except during active loading.
Commercial vehicle parking in Oakland County is regulated by each city/township zoning code, not the County. Royal Oak (City Code Ch. 770 - Zoning, restrictions on parking of commercial vehicles) provides that 'in districts zoned One-Family, Two-Family or Multiple-Family Residential, for each dwelling unit on a lot not more than one commercial vehicle, owned by an occupant, and having a weight fully equipped of not more than 6,000 pounds may be parked on the premises.' Troy's code allows only one commercial vehicle per dwelling, must be pickup or cargo van; semi-trucks, trailers, and dump trucks are barred from residential property. On-street parking of any commercial vehicle on a residential street is limited to 1 hour unless actively loading, unloading, or servicing a residence (Troy Code Ch. 107). Farmington Hills follows the same 6,000-lb residential cap. Semi-truck overnight parking is restricted to industrial-zoned lots and permitted truck stops.
Commercial-vehicle parking violations are municipal civil infractions: $100-$300 first offense in Royal Oak, Troy, and Farmington Hills, with escalating fines and tow costs for repeat or oversize-vehicle violations. Parking a semi-truck or trailer on a residential street can be ticketed every 24 hours until removed and may be towed under MCL 257.252a after 48 hours.
