The Wake County Unified Development Ordinance does not prohibit parking commercial vehicles at a residence in the unincorporated county; it instead regulates off-street parking quantity and design in Article 15. Inside Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, Garner, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Morrisville and other towns, each municipality limits parking of commercial trucks, tractor-trailers, and rated-weight vehicles in residential zoning districts.
Raleigh City Code §10-2103 limits the parking of commercial vehicles over a certain gross vehicle weight rating in residential districts to bona fide loading/unloading. Cary's Land Development Ordinance §7.4.4 prohibits parking tractors, semi-trailers and commercial trucks over 12,500 pounds GVWR in residential districts other than R-40 and rural districts, except for short-term loading. Wake Forest UDO §7.6 limits parking of any vehicle exceeding 12,000 pounds GVWR or 24 feet in length on residential lots to short-term loading. In unincorporated Wake County, parking a personal commercial truck at home is generally permitted as long as it does not violate the UDO's off-street-parking, screening, or front-yard setback standards.
Wake County UDO violations are subject to civil penalties of up to $500 per day after notice under §19-1 (general penalty). Raleigh and Cary violations follow each city's civil penalty schedule (Raleigh: $50 first offense; Cary: $100 per day).
