Arlington requires vehicles in residential driveways to park on improved surfaces — concrete, asphalt, or approved pavers — and prohibits parking on front yard grass or in side yards visible from the street. Driveways must meet width and apron standards set by the Unified Development Code.
Arlington's Unified Development Code §5.4 and Code of Ordinances Chapter 24 (Vehicles and Traffic) together govern residential driveway parking. In single-family districts, operable passenger vehicles must be parked on an improved surface meeting the city's definition — a continuous paved area of concrete, asphalt, brick pavers, or similar hard material not less than nine feet wide per vehicle. Parking on front lawns, in drainage swales, or on unpaved extensions of driveways is a code violation subject to fines up to $500 per day per vehicle. Side yard parking is allowed only if screened by a six-foot opaque fence and accessed by an approved side drive. The curb cut and driveway apron between the street and property line are regulated by Public Works: residential aprons cannot exceed 24 feet in width, and new or widened curb cuts require a Right of Way permit with a $75 application fee. Inoperable or unregistered vehicles cannot be stored in the driveway visible from public view for more than 72 hours. Commercial vehicles over one ton rated capacity and trailers over 20 feet may not be parked in residential driveways overnight except while actively loading or unloading.
