Laredo permits residential and commercial EV charging installations under NEC Article 625. Level 2 home chargers require electrical permit. Public chargers available at City Hall, TAMIU, and retail centers. No dedicated EV parking ordinance yet.
Laredo Building Division issues electrical permits for EV charging installations under the 2020 National Electrical Code Article 625. Level 2 (240V) home chargers require a permit (approximately 50-100 dollars) and inspection; the circuit must be a dedicated 40-50 amp branch. Level 1 (120V) plug-in chargers on existing outlets do not require a permit. Commercial installations require load calculations and may trigger service upgrades. Laredo lags behind larger Texas cities in EV infrastructure but public charging is available at City Hall, TAMIU campus, H-E-B, and Outlet Shoppes at Laredo. The city has not adopted a mandatory EV-ready parking ordinance for new construction; Texas does not mandate it at the state level either. ICE vehicles parking in designated EV spaces at private lots is enforceable only if the lot posts signage.
Unpermitted Level 2 install: stop work, electrical re-inspection required. Unsafe installation: red-tag.
