Colonie, NY Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

Overnight street parking in the Town of Colonie is allowed by default except where prohibited by Chapter 181 (Vehicles and Traffic). Section 181-38 incorporates Schedule IX (parking prohibited at all times) and Schedule X (parking prohibited during the hours indicated), so any block that appears in those schedules - including overnight windows - is closed to parking. During snow events, the Highway Superintendent under NY Town Law §140 and Chapter 167 (Streets and Sidewalks) has authority to clear streets, and Chapter 181 Article IV (Removal and Storage of Vehicles, § 181-40 et seq.) authorizes Town police or the Highway Superintendent to remove vehicles obstructing snow removal or other Town operations. Section 181-31 still requires vehicles to be parked parallel to the curb in the direction of lawful traffic within 12 inches of the curb. The Chapter 190 zoning rules on RV/boat storage and the prohibition on residential storage of commercial vehicles over one ton capacity / three tons gross weight continue to apply 24 hours a day in residential districts. Visitors should check posted signs - many residential streets, shopping center private lots and apartment complexes post their own overnight restrictions, with private property enforced via tow under NY VAT §1224 and NY Lien Law.
