Colonie, NY Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Town Code § 181-19 sets the manner-of-parking standard for every street in Colonie: where a space is marked off, the vehicle must sit within the lines bounding that space, and where a highway has no adjacent curb, vehicles must stop, stand or park parallel to the edge of the roadway, headed in the direction of lawful traffic, except where the Town has specifically authorized angle parking. Article III opens with § 181-18, which limits the whole article so a driver isn't cited for stopping to avoid a traffic conflict or to obey a police officer or traffic control device.

The article works alongside the no-parking, no-standing, and no-stopping schedules in §§ 181-20 through 181-24, which the Town Board adopts and amends under § 181-4 and records in the Article V schedules; a location isn't restricted until the Town Board publishes the rule in the official newspaper and marks the area with a sign. Enforcement of Chapter 181 falls to the Town of Colonie Police Department, Building Department, Engineering and Planning Services Department, and Justice Department under § 181-6. Penalties run through § 181-5: a first traffic-infraction conviction under this chapter draws a fine of not more than $50 or up to 15 days in jail, or both; a second conviction within 18 months draws up to $100 or 45 days; a third or subsequent conviction within 18 months of the first draws up to $250 or 90 days.

Because these are Town parking rules rather than New York Vehicle and Traffic Law violations, they carry their own penalty schedule instead of the state's point system.
