Colonie, NY Parking Rules: RV & Boat Parking (2026)

Colonie Code § 190-6 defines an OVERSIZED VEHICLE as any vehicle with an overall length over 25 feet, an overall width over eight feet, an overall height (excluding antennas) over eight feet, or a weight over 8,000 pounds, with widths counted inclusive of loads and attachments. That definition sweeps in most Class A and Class C motorhomes, larger travel trailers, and many boat-and-trailer combinations. Section 190-22D(1) bars parking any oversized vehicle on a public street or in the street right-of-way anywhere in the Town, with narrow carve-outs for vehicles actively assisting at a fire or traffic accident and for moving vans or delivery trucks actively being loaded or unloaded.

Section 190-22D(2) separately addresses front yards: on a single-family or two-family lot, an oversized vehicle cannot be parked or stored in the front yard unless it is currently registered and insured. The code sets no side- or rear-yard limit for oversized vehicles and requires no permit to keep one in a driveway or rear yard, so a properly plated and insured RV or boat trailer kept behind the front-yard line escapes this section. The Building Department administers Article IV of Chapter 190 under § 190-28's inspection authority.

Enforcement runs through the general zoning penalty at § 190-129: a first conviction carries a fine of up to $350 or up to six months in jail, a second carries $350 to $700, and a third or later carries $700 to $1,000, with each day of a continuing violation charged separately. The Town Attorney can also sue to compel compliance or enjoin the violation, and a civil penalty of up to $250 per day is available in lieu of or in addition to criminal fines.
