Albany's Unified Sustainable Development Ordinance (Chapter 375) restricts where boats, boat trailers, campers, travel trailers, and recreational vehicles may be stored on residential property β they are limited to the rear yard. Albany's traffic regulations also prohibit parking an unattached trailer (boat, utility, or truck trailer) on any city street. RV/boat owners in dense neighborhoods near the Capitol, Pine Hills, and Delaware Avenue typically use off-site storage facilities.
Storage of recreational vehicles in residential districts is governed by Article IV of the Albany Unified Sustainable Development Ordinance (USDO), codified as Chapter 375 of the Albany City Code. Article IV directs that "boats, boat trailers, trailers, campers, and recreational vehicles shall only be stored in a rear yard" on a residential lot. Front-yard storage and driveway storage forward of the principal building's front building line are not permitted, regardless of how the vehicle is screened. The rule applies in every residential district (R-1, R-2, R-T, R-V, MU-NE, MU-CU). For corner lots, the side yard facing the street is treated as a front yard for this purpose.
On-street storage is separately restricted by Albany's traffic regulations. Unattached trailers β boat trailers, utility trailers, and truck trailers β may not be parked on any city street at any time, even briefly. An attached, registered RV or a boat on a registered trailer towed behind a vehicle may use the street, but only subject to the citywide 72-hour maximum and to any Residential Parking Permit System (RPPS) restriction that applies on the block. In RPPS zones near the Empire State Plaza, downtown, and SUNY Albany's downtown campus, non-permit vehicles are limited to 2 hours between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM on weekdays.
During declared snow emergencies, alternate-side parking rules apply by date (odd date / odd side). An RV or trailered boat caught on the wrong side or on a posted snow emergency route during an emergency is towed at the owner's expense. In Albany's designated historic districts (Center Square, Mansion Hill, Ten Broeck Triangle, Pastures, Arbor Hill), the Historic Resources Commission also reviews visible accessory uses; a tarp-covered RV in a rear yard visible from the right-of-way can draw a notice if it conflicts with district character. The Department of Buildings & Regulatory Compliance handles complaints on zoning violations; on-street parking issues are handled by the Albany Parking Authority and APD.
Storing an RV, camper, boat, or trailer in a front or side yard in violation of USDO Article IV is a zoning violation. The Department of Buildings & Regulatory Compliance can issue a notice of violation and assess fines of $250β$1,000 per day until the unit is moved to a rear yard or off the property. Parking an unattached trailer on a city street typically draws a $45β$75 ticket and a tow. Snow emergency violations are $75 plus tow and storage.
