NYC allows overnight street parking in most areas subject to alternate side parking (ASP) rules for street cleaning. No general overnight parking ban exists, but certain zones near parks and in commercial districts have restrictions. Overnight parking in city garages is regulated by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.
NYC does not impose a citywide overnight on-street parking ban. Vehicles may remain parked overnight on most streets subject to posted regulations including alternate side parking (ASP), which requires vehicles to move for street cleaning on designated days and times. ASP is suspended on certain holidays per the DOT calendar. Parking meters in most of Manhattan are enforced until 10 PM (some until midnight), after which parking is free until meters resume. In residential neighborhoods, overnight parking is generally unrestricted unless posted otherwise. Commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs are prohibited from parking on residential streets between 9 PM and 5 AM under Traffic Rules Β§4-08(k)(6). Parks Department roads and areas around Yankee Stadium, Citi Field, and other venues have event-specific restrictions.
ASP violation: $65 fine. Expired meter: $65 (Manhattan), $35 (other boroughs). Commercial vehicle overnight parking on residential street: $265 fine. Towing possible for obstructing cleaning operations.
