Brooklyn allows overnight street parking with no citywide ban. Cars must still follow alternate-side cleaning, commercial-only signs, and cannot sit more than 7 days unmoved.
Unlike many suburbs, Brooklyn and all of NYC permit residential overnight street parking without time-of-day restrictions by default. Vehicles remain subject to the full web of NYC Traffic Rules under RCNY Title 34 and NYC Admin Code Title 19. Key overnight rules: vehicles cannot be parked in the same spot for more than 7 consecutive days (NYC Traffic Rules Β§4-08(f)(5)) or they may be towed as derelict; vehicles must be moved for alternate-side parking (ASP) for street cleaning β typically 1.5 hours twice a week; commercial-vehicle-only signs (common near warehouses in Gowanus and Red Hook) prohibit passenger cars overnight; meters generally do not apply overnight but rules are always signed; and 'No Standing' zones (near hospitals, schools, FDNY houses) are enforced 24/7. Commercial vehicles over 18 feet are banned from residential streets overnight under Β§4-08(m). Vehicle size and loaded-weight limits apply. Sleeping in a car is generally tolerated but not a protected right.
ASP violation: $65. Commercial vehicle on residential street overnight: $165. Parked over 7 days (dead-storage): $65 and tow. No Standing: $115.
