Rio Rancho Section 12-6-6.5(B) prohibits parking any vehicle, trailer, or tandem exceeding 7 feet in width and/or 7 feet in height on any residential street from one-half hour after sundown to one-half hour before sunrise, unless loading or unloading. This is the city's core oversized-vehicle limit.
Rio Rancho's principal oversized-vehicle parking rule is in the all-night parking section. Section 12-6-6.5(B) provides that no person shall park or cause to be parked any vehicle, or any portion thereof, trailer, or tandem in excess of 7 feet in width and/or 7 feet in height on any street in a residential area from the hours of one-half hour after sundown to one-half hour before sunrise, unless engaged in the process of loading or unloading passengers or freight. Because most RVs, large trucks, box trucks, and trailered boats exceed those dimensions, the rule effectively prohibits overnight on-street parking of oversized vehicles in residential neighborhoods. The city also enforces general parking prohibitions under Section 12-6-6.1 (no parking in specified hazardous places) and may post additional restrictions on narrow streets under Section 12-6-6.8 (signs permitted where street width does not exceed 24 feet, or one side where width does not exceed 32 feet). Special permits for backing a vehicle to the curb to load or unload may be issued under Section 12-6-6.13.
Parking an over-7-foot-wide or over-7-foot-tall vehicle/trailer on a residential street overnight violates Section 12-6-6.5(B). The Department of Public Safety enforces with a citation; vehicles blocking traffic or in posted no-parking areas may also be removed.
