Rio Rancho's traffic code (Title 12, Article VI, largely adopting New Mexico law) governs on-street parking. Vehicles must park within 18 inches of the right-hand curb, may not park in prohibited locations, and must display current, valid registration to be parked on a public street.
On-street parking in Rio Rancho is regulated by Title 12, Article VI of the Municipal Code, which adopts and supplements New Mexico's Motor Vehicle Code. Section 12-6-6.2(A) requires every vehicle stopped or parked where there are curbs to be parked with its right-hand wheels parallel to and within 18 inches of the right-hand curb (mirroring NMSA 1978, Section 66-7-352). Section 12-6-6.1 prohibits stopping, standing, or parking in specified places, including within 30 feet of a stop sign or signal, on the street side of a parked vehicle (double parking), between a curb and sidewalk, and anywhere official signs prohibit it (NMSA 1978, Section 66-7-351). Section 12-10-4(A) makes it a violation to drive or park on any public street or public parking area a motor vehicle or trailer that does not display one or more visible current, valid registration plates. The city administrator may further restrict or prohibit parking on specific streets by erecting signs (Sections 12-6-6.7 through 12-6-6.12), and signed time limits apply between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. except Sundays and holidays.
Improperly parked, unregistered, or sign-violation parking is enforced by the Department of Public Safety. Citations are issued under the corresponding Title 12 sections; an unregistered vehicle on the street violates Section 12-10-4. Vehicles may be cited or removed where official signs prohibit parking.
